NOW PLAYING: Laser Gum Contouring

If the patient had crooked teeth previously or mal-positioned teeth, the gums are still not in the right position. So it’s often necessary to re-contour the gums as well. To help us do this we have a laser, a diode laser, that allows us to have complete control over the shape of the gum, which is done in a way where there's no bleeding involved. In the past that was done with a scalpel, there were sutures that were involved, it was—it took a long time to heal. But with the laser it’s all done painlessly and the healing time is literally within days. Lasers are also used for other purposes in the dental office including for procedures such as relieving canker sores, for treating gum disease by sterilizing a pocket for somebody that has periodontal disease, and for removing extra tissue around teeth. Whatever we were able to do prior with a scalpel, we can now use a laser which creates a much quicker healing and little if any bleeding at all.
